The rules of the job search have changed. No longer is it enough to send out a resume, make a few calls, and wait for a job to pop up. Networking, social media and technology now play key roles in your job search strategy. Here are 10 tips to amplify your search.

1. Get in the game. The job market is more competitive than ever; you can’t wait for the job to come to you. It’s more than just sending out your resume. Set goals, follow a schedule and hold yourself accountable.

2. Act like a brand. A job search is about selling yourself to an employer. What makes you unique? What is your brand? Sum up your brand with a great tag line and story and then live it every day.

3. Develop a good pitch. Sometimes called an elevator pitch, you need to sum up your experience, expertise and career goals in a few, casual sentences.

4. Look beyond the job boards. Only about 20% of jobs are ever advertised. Search smarter. Use job board aggregators e.g. indeed.com and job alert emails to save valuable search time.

5. Networking is king. This is where you should spend most of your job search time. Identify your network, build your network, and keep your network updated on your career status. These contacts are the people who are most likely going to help you find your next opportunity.

6. Get social. Establish and maintain a healthy online presence. Set up accounts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to get started. Be professional, helpful, and valuable when interacting on these sites. Use the sites to learn, network, find jobs, and share content.

7. Maximize LinkedIn’s potential. Reach out to your online contacts and connect on LinkedIn. Create a powerful profile. Contribute useful information and help others when asked.

8. Tweet for success. Find people, companies, and relevant topics to follow. Learn from the experts, tweet and retweet solid advice and articles, and promote yourself, too.

9. Reputation matters. Good or bad, all of your online activity is out there. Keep an eye on what’s visible to potential employers by setting up alerts to monitor your name. Try to keep things positive.

10. Don’t get stuck in a rut. If things aren’t working, shake up your search. Try a new schedule, volunteer, join a club, find a mentor, make new contacts, update your network, take a class, or set new goals. Flexibility and endurance will help you find success.
