“Why do you want to work here?” This is another interview question that stumps a lot of people. Sometimes the first thing that pops into your mind is not the right thing to say. For example:

Not so good answers:  “Because you asked me to come in for an interview.” “Because I live next door.”  “Because I’m desperate for a job.”

If you answer with something like that, you will probably receive looks of shock and horror from the interviewer. Take some time with this question. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate to the employer that you have done your research about the company and you have a decent idea of how you can fit in.

This is a pretty big question for the employer. They want to know that you are genuinely interested in the company. You can prove this by filling your answer with information you know about the company, the positive things you’ve learned by researching the company further, and mentioning the cool, interesting things you like about the company. Employers like to hear that you like and are excited about their company.

Once you’ve wowed them with your info, move into telling the employer how you see yourself stepping in and playing a role that will contribute to continued success. Give examples of how your experience and expertise can help the company.

Since this is a pretty common interview question, I would suggest preparing an answer ahead of time. That way, you can practice saying it a few times before the big day and hopefully it will sound natural and sincere. Remember, a good answer to this question gives a balance of information about the company and information about you. The right mix could give you a great shot at a second interview, or even the job.
