If you haven’t been asked this, then you probably have never been on an interview. This is one of the most commonly asked interview questions around. While the question seems simple and harmless, it can be the one question that can make or break your interview.

This question is your chance to break the ice, get the conversation going, and make a great impression. It’s not a chance to tell the interviewer your life story, your favorite TV show or the name of your pet.

You may still be thinking that this is still a pretty easy question and that there is no need to prepare an answer in advance. I would say that is absolutely wrong. While you don’t want to come across as too rehearsed, you do want to present yourself in the best way possible. Here are my suggestions:

  1. Tailor your answer to the position at hand. Know as much as you can about the available job, the company, and the work you may be doing and sprinkle that into your answer.
  2. Focus on why you are qualified. Present your strongest skills, personality characteristics, knowledge, and experience that are relevant to the job.
  3. Share your current situation. Tell them what you are doing now and where you want to go.

And, one more thing; your answer to this question isn’t the only thing that matters. What matters even more is the confidence, passion and speed with which you deliver your answer. This is not the place for stalling, reflecting and hmmm-ing around. This is your time to shine. So, start practicing now. You never know when your next job opportunity will come knocking.
