Social Media In One Word
During our last webinar, we wanted to see how you really feel about social media.
So, we asked our 3,423 attendees to text us the answer to the following question:
What ONE word would you use
to describe social media in today’s workplace?
We received a total of 123 different answers expressing wildly divergent opinions about SM. Some love it. Some hate it. Very few are in-between.
The most frequent response — “necessary” — shows just how quickly SM has become indispensable to many in the workplace. However, the fact that three of the top five answers were “distracting,” “dangerous” and “scary” indicates that SM isn’t exactly embraced by everyone.
Here were the most frequent responses:
- necessary (35)
- distracting (17)
- dangerous (10)
- scary (8)
- growing (6)
- wasteful (6)
- annoying (5)
- complicated (5)

Social media for me is evolving.=D From being just an inane chatter before (apology for using the word), it is now a site where people can share news links and add value to the community. Sad to know that there are still people who find SM wasteful.
Interesting that, although the biggest response was positive, the responders were actually evenly divided on whether social media is positive or negative!
Yep. My personal feeling is that those who embrace the opportunities offered by SM will win in the ever-changing world of work. Those that don’t, won’t.
