Hello Melanie,
The timing of your July 20 blog couldn’t have come at a better time for me. For many reasons, it has touched a chord in me, so thank you very much!!!
Much Sincere,
Marie
Thanks for sharing Melanie. So true!
I took a meditation class my last semester of college (so… a few months ago), and I thought it was really excellent practice to center myself in the moment and–unlike popular conceptions of meditation–notice how my mind works. All the defective thoughts in me bubble up to the surface and once I notice them I can “deal with them.” I can’t do much to change everything in the world that affects me, but I can change how I react. I learned that it doesn’t make sense to live in the past or in the future, but to stay mindful of the immediate moment.
A scene from Hamlet:
HAMLET: Denmark’s a prison. / ROSENCRANTZ: Then is the world one. / HAMLET: A goodly one; in which there are many confines, wards and dungeons, Denmark being one o’ the worst. / ROSENCRANTZ: We think not so, my lord. / HAMLET: Why, then, ’tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so: to me it is a prison.
If we expect that bad things will happen we will notice when they do–and bad things will always happen. But our focus will be directed away from everything else. Like Hamlet says (whiny though he may be) we get to choose our meaning, so like you say, why not make that meaning positive?
Great thoughts.
